Equipped with The Ferns of Great Britain and Ireland or one of the many other books sold for fern identification, collectors sought out ferns from dealers and in their native habitats across the British Isles and beyond. Fronds were pressed in albums for display in homes. Live plants were also collected for cultivation in gardens and indoors.   An illustration of a Wardian case, from the book An Analysis of the British Ferns and their Allies. Wellcome Images, London/ CC BY Since the fern was not easy to cultivate, even with Author: Dimitra Nikolaidou.

Like the sporophytes of seed plants, those of ferns consist of stems, leaves and roots. Ferns differ from seed plants in reproducing by spores and from bryophytes in that, like seed plants, they are Polysporangiophytes, their sporophytes branching and producing many bryophytes, fern sporophytes are free-living and only briefly dependent on the maternal Clade: Tracheophytes. OUR NATIVE FERNS, WONDERFULLY ILLUSTRATED. LOWE, Edward Joseph. Our Native Ferns; Or a History of the British Species and their Varieties. London: George Bell & Sons, Two volumes. Octavo, original green cloth, gilt-stamped with fern emblems. Early edition, abundantly illustrated with 79 color plates and over wood engravings.

These ferns can be difficult to cultivate in areas outside their native haunts. In the garden, they can tolerate considerable sun but must be planted where there is sharp drainage. Most are rated for zones 7 to 8 but C. lanosa and C. tomentosa, two tufted species, are rated for zone 5 and 6 respectively.   Horsetail Fern is a plant with a single genus which is the genus of Equisetum. This genera is covering about 25 species, some of them lived on the land and the other species lived on the swamp. The popular example of Equisetum debile is the Horsetail Fern.
